About Ubay! by Pamela Villagonza (CNHS)
Ubay was the term given by a Spanish person looking for a town.
Long time ago, at the year 1880's this town (Ubay at present) was being part of our very own Talibon, Bohol. Time pass by, it was being separated from Talibon, for its being independent town. Before and after the separation, this town (Ubay) encountered many problems such as it was being invaded by an immigrant person that came from different places. Just like the Americans, Japanese and Spaniards.
One of the groups of immigrant persons has a huge influence unto the Ubayanon, and this was the group of Spaniards. Even before when Spaniards came here its became a big suffering but a little luck of all the people living here in the town, Spaniards wanted the Ubayanon to hug their religion as part of their plan for having here in this land. That religion is known now as Christianism. It is being introduced by an explorer and a leader named Ferdinand Magellan, a Portugese. As you can observed, many diff. portrait of the Holy Child was being displayed in diff. Churches, but its not been the real image of the Holy Child, its been a replica of the Holy Child. That's why the patron of this town (Ubay) is the Senior Sto.Niño.
At the year 1886-1887, the very first priest in our town of Ubay was a Spaniard too.He was Rev.Fr.Blas Adan a formerly Spanish priest. After the town Ubay separated from its origin, the Talibon, our honourable Cong. Erico Aumentado wanted/wished that the diocese of Talibon should be transferred to Ubay. But the people in Talibon refused and apologized for the reason why they don't want to do it. That's why for now on, the Diocese is still in Talibon, Bohol. The word "Ubay" was not being heared before. When Spaniards came here, one of the immigrant person asked if where is the town of Ubay can be found. He asked to an Ubayanon like this:"Excuse me, where is the way to Ubay? The Ubayanon answered this way:"Senior, you "pang-ubay" this way and after that you can see a town, that's what the town ubay you're looking for". At that moment, the word "Ubay" was being heared and used by an Ubayanon. Consequently, living in Ubay was not easy before, because its suffers so many tragedy. But the wonderful thing that happened was when this town was being invaded and attack by the immigration. During World War II, the Americans used to eject their bomb here in the Pob. Ubay, but suddenly at the moment that they used to press the button, the whole town turned into a body of water, or shall I call it sea. The soldiers were shocked and didn't know where was the town goes. They ignore it, and it, and went back to their camp/place.
Like wise during the Japanese time in Ubay, they also used to eject their bomb at a plain landscape (Camambugan landing now). They used to attack and to destroy the land unfortunately, when they released the bombs, it goes to another direction. Resulting to make some holes on the ground, because of the greater impact this place now benefited all people living near of it. They used to have rice fields from the holes and plain fields for racing their animals. It was really amazing and this kind story amazed me also. And its really incredible for me.
Ubay before has a good economic status. Even now and then its been increasing and Ubay now is one of the first class town here in Bohol. Vendors, and business before even now if you asked them if how is there business going on they would say:"Oh! My day and my business is very lucky because "ubay-ubay" (more) customers buy my products. Even though simple livelihood of people before like fishermans, when you're asking if how's their days they would simply say;"Bay ubay-ubay (is my) fishes I caught today and for tomorrow. And for that reason, this town formerly called "Ubay". I would ratherly say that Ubay is not an ordinary town, because in our language as you serable the word "ubay" you can form another word "uyab" which meant by a lover. That's why UBAY is a very precious treasure for me, because most of the people living here in Ubay is a lover of GOD. And I would ratherly say Ubay is not just only been a place, but a land of love. Why? Because since I was born in this town, it is so idealistic town that should be idolized cause even though many people had idolatry here in this town, I believe that they believe also in one GOD JESUS CHRIST and the Holy Child. With the blessing of our Almighty GOD and w/ the help and love of our sacred and Holy Child, the town of Ubay overcome all the obstacles and won the game of life. So, for now, in my own observation, as time pass by, Ubay will be a city nor a city of love. People will have an adequate jobs, investments must increase rapidly and hopefully improving businesses in our economy will lead us to success and makes us more worthy. Mabuhay "Ubay"
